Los Angeles Beach, original oil painting by Tan Xuesheng (2000) In addition to the colors, we also were attracted by the movement in this work. Tan and his wife, artist Xu Jain Bai, moved from Guangzhou, China to America, in the early 1990's. Tan's work became more impressionistic in style and color, in the later part of his career. |

Five Tower Temple: original oil painting by Xue Sheng Tan (1983) This is another great pastel-colored painting by Tan, which is what we love most about his paintings. Here, we have a large dark tree, dominating the foreground, capturing our attention. The temple, with its light pastel colors seems like it is enveloped in a slight mist. It is a wonderful composition. The five tower temple is an Indian Buddhist concept, and there were several built in China, including in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Beijing. We show two, on the hyperlink page. Trained by the the famous Feng Mian Lin (Lin Feng Mian), Tan's style and composition are very impressionistic. |

South China Fishing Dock: original oil painting by Xue Sheng Tan (1986) We love the child-like, rustic feel of this impression of a fishing dock, done in beautiful bright colors: in China, expect to see red. |

Great Wall: original oil painting on canvas by Xue Sheng Tan (1980) The Great Wall of China is s symbol of the China of old. It is said, in China, that a boy cannot become a man until he sees the Great Wall. Seeing it, like this, through the eyes of Xue Sheng Tan, done in regal colors of blues, purples and greens, make me appreciate it even more than if I had seen it, in person. Mountains in a misty background are a trademark of traditional Chinese art. A painter who began his career in the first half of the 20th century, Tan has his roots in impressionism, and we always appreciate his colorful palette and masterful brushstrokes. If you cannot visit the Great Wall, or if you want an extraordinary memento, this painting fits the bill. |

Female Nude, original oil painting by Tan Xue Sheng This is one of only a few portraits that we have in our gallery by Tan. Moreover, for this one portrait, Tan has tried his hand at nude portraiture. Trained by Lin Feng Mian (Feng Mian Lin), from among the original artists who brought modern Western oil painting styles to China, in the early part of the 20th century, Tan tends to be impressionistic with simplistic honesty, in his style. The setting is unusual also. It's as if she is sitting on canvas with canvas on the wall in the artist's studio. Or it could be expression of rocks and a forest. We would ask, but it's more fun to guess, in this case. |
