198. | White Poplar Forest, original oil
painting on
canvas by Meng Liu (2009) I, personally, have always loved white poplar forests. I used to see them all along the highway, driving on the interstates of central Pennsylvania, and I see them, in China, now, in art. Indeed, they have continued to be popular, apparently, with Chinese artists, as we have have another, painted by Xue Sheng Tan, from several decades ago. It is a lovely, tranquil scene, done by a fine contemporary artist. |

710. | Venice Canal, original oil painting on canvas by Meng
Liu (2002) As an Italian, in China, in the art business, I am always glad to find Chinese paintings of others parts of the world, especially from the Mediterranean. Meng Liu has traveled in Europe, and, like a true artist, he has recorded some of his memories in paintings. This is one of several that he painted in Venice, and we just loved the colors: after all, the colors of our gallery's logo are the primary colors, which also dominate this painting. It is even more precious because China is also famous for its water villages, and Chinese painters have done many paintings of them. For example, here, in Guangzhou, we have a water village at the southern boundary of the city, called Xiaozhou, which has attracted many of the local artists to paint its canals and bridges, and we even have a number of those paintings in our gallery. Meng Liu is a fine artist from the old northern Chinese capital of Shenyang. He did many paintings in impressionistic styles in the late 1990's to early 2000's, and we are very impressed by his style, in those, with this one as a good example. |

117. | Haystack and Mountain: original oil
painting on canvas by Meng
Liu (1997) The haystack has been an object of studies for many artists, beginning, at least, with the Impressionists, particularly, Monet. I have even owned several others, in the past, by American Impressionists: one by the 19th century artist, Daniel Santry, and another by the 20th century artist, Eliot Clark; I also own another one, now, by Dapu (Ai Min Zhang). The Santry painting was dark and serious, using golds and dark reds. The Clark painting had more of an Impressionist's bright-colored palette with a bright almost electric-blue sky with yellow streaks from a setting sun. This one by Meng Liu goes even more towards the both Impressionist's palette and technique. He uses colors that are more to the green-blue-red-violet part of the palette, and it is done in a pointillist style. Moreover, while most of the haystack works that we have seen have the haystack, somehow, dominating the scene, in this one, the haystack is placed in front of a mountain, appearing as a smaller repetition of the mountain, or is it the other way around. The painting is small enough, 35 cm by 27 cm, that we can ship it stretched and already framed, which is included in the price quoted, here. |

712. | Cows Come Home in the Evening, original
oil painting on canvas by Meng Liu Cows are uncommon in much of China, so, when you see a cow herder, they usually only have a few cows, not the large herds that you would see even at a small farm, in the US. This is one of two paintings that we have of Cow hereds by Meng Liu, in the Leona Craig Art Gallery. The other one is a morning scene with the herder taking the cows out to pasture, in the morning; in this one, they are returning home for the evening. The other painting is misty and darker, while this one is more colorful and bright. We like the works of Meng Liu because they show good technique and diverse and thoughful subjects. We also tend to appreciate scenes from real life, in China, instead of the glitzy portrails that China tries to show the world, in its own press releases. |

703. | Holland Windmill: original oil painting on canvas by Meng Liu Chinese art has been merging with Western art for several centuries, especially, in the last hundred years. Those fathers of contemporary Chinese oil paintings from the early 1900's did not just read about Western painting techniques but went abroad to learn about Western art and, also, to experience the culture. Of course, during the rein of Chairman Mao, no one was allowed to leave the country, and those who had been abroad were always suspect. Thus, we particularly enjoy seeing art done by Chinese artists about their current experiences outside of China. This scene from a small village in the Netherlands with its windmill, in the background, is a nice part of Meng Liu's personal log of his travels abroad. |
