New Century, painting by Tang Hai Guo 766. Into the New Century, original oil painting by Tang Hai Guo

Karaoke (Chinese KTV) is a favorite outlet for people, in China, today.  They work long hours, six days a week with overtime, in jobs that give them no joy.  So, when they have a day off or get their monthly paycheck, they celebrate with a bunch of friends, in a private room at a KTV, smoking, drinking, singing and playing games, trying to numb themselves into happiness.  They are just a room full of slaves.

Winter in Hainan by Jin Ming Li   Winter in Hainan: original watercolor painting by Jin Ming Li (1980)

This one was done three decades ago on a visit to Hainan Island, off the southern coast of China, in the winter time.  Li said that he was so delighted to find that the weather was still so warn, in the winter, and that there were so many birds.  He painted it in an expressionistic style, using pink for the sky to express the happiness that he felt, in such a wondrous place. It is not only a piece of his history but, also, of China's, in that Hainan Island has recently been slated for development, and it will never be the paradise that it was back then.  The colors are just beautiful.

"House with Car" by Guang Zhi Zhang 168. House with Car: original oil painting on canvas by Guang Zhi Zhang

The title belies the importance of that phrase, in today's China.  If people have a car, they must be very rich because, in terms of the undervalued Chinese Yuan, cars cost several hundred thousand because they are priced on international prices, which is more expensive than a house.  It is true social commentary art, but subtle.  It reminds me, both in honesty and in iconic value, of Grant Wood's "American Gothic", and paintings of common American life by Edward Hopper.

Having begun his career painting pictures for Mao Zedong, in the People's Army, Zhang was later trained by the famous French Trompe L'oeil artist, Claude Yvel, Guang Zhi Zhang's painting style can be very realistic; in this painting, the reality is the scene, itself, done in a more impressionistic painting style.  So, with the pitched-in-the-middle-of-nowhere house and the cell phone towers, in their backyard, the reality is that these people are rich enough to own a house and a car.  Even the car used in the painting is perfect since a very popular car owned by many locals is the versatile white van, much like the one in the picture.  The blue trees give the piece a surrealistic feel, much as life can be, in modern China.  And I guess pop culture art has come to China.

White Poplar Forest by Liu Meng 198. White Poplar Forest, original oil painting on canvas by Meng Liu (2009)

I, personally, have always loved white poplar forests.  I used to see them all along the highway, driving on the interstates of central Pennsylvania, and I see them, in China, now, in art.  Indeed, they have continued to be popular, apparently, with Chinese artists, as we have have another, painted by Xue Sheng Tan, from several decades ago.

It is done in an impressionistic style with bold brushstrokes, which was typical of Liu's earlier paintings.  It is a lovely, tranquil scene, done by a fine contemporary artist.

Herding Sheep, panitng by Dapu 615. Herding Sheep: original oil painting on canvas by Dapu (Zhang Ai Min) 2009

We liked the more dark, brooding colors, purples, blue-greens, and tans, of this painting of a herder returning home with his flock for the evening.  It is more reminiscent of the "Tonalist School", paintings from which we have had, in the past.

Dapu always makes beautiful pictures from simple scenes of daily life on the Tibetan plateau, and his breadth of styles and techniques makes us appreciate him even more.

Medieval Man: painting by Feng Wu Sui 149. Medieval Man: original oil painting on canvas by Feng Wu Sui (2007)

They say that portraiture is the true test of an artist's ability, and with this simple portrait of a Medieval man, we feel that Feng Wu Sui has passed the test.  In fact, sometimes, portraits can seem contrived or slightly boring, but this one makes me feel that this is a man of character: his face is strong yet gentle.  He seems thoughtful and involved in his surroundings, even though his surroundings are not pictured.  His expression draws you in.  What is he looking at with that look on his face?  Is there a threat, a beautiful woman, has someone just asked him a question, or is he just lost in thought?

The brushwork in this portrait is quite beautiful, mixing colors with brush technique to make the lines, angles, shapes, and shadows of the face.  The bright colors of the man's Medieval headdress make this wonderful little portrait even more striking.
