Overlooking Macau by Li Jin Ming   Overlooking Macau, original oil painting by Li Jin Ming (1999) 眺望澳门

Macau has been a topic of painting for many Guangdong artists.  Like Hong Kong, it is a modern city on the water.  The northern-most section of Macau is connected to Zhuhai, a mainland city, and a finger of Zhuhai runs west of Macau, forming a sheltered harbor.  This scene is a view of the harbor and the city from that finger.  Li was actually asked to leave by security guards, in the area while he was painting this: go figure.

It is painted in a free expressionistic style with broad sharp brush strokes for the clouds in the sky and the water with mostly grays, blues, and blacks and only a touch of color, here and there.  Perhaps, it reflects Li’s mood after being asked to leave by the guards.

Ta'er Temple: painting by Dapu 141. Ta'er Temple: original oil painting on canvas by Dapu (Ai Min Zhang), 2009

Located in Qinhai Province, also, home of the artist, on the Tibetan Plateau, Ta'er Temple was the birthplace of Sumatikirti (Tsonkhapa in Tibetan), founder of the Gelukpa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It's first structure was built in 1379 and the temple, one of the six major temples of Gelukpa Buddhism, was built during the Ming Dynasty.

The inverted bowl dagoba tower, a typical motif of Buddhist architecture and the focal point of the painting, is one of a number in the temple complex.  A monk is seen walking through the complex, guiding our eye to other details.  The colors are vibrant, and there is much impasto and other detailing that combine to make this painting so special.

"The Cowherd": painting by Meng Liu  181. The Cowherd: original oil painting on canvas by Meng Liu (1996)

You might not be aware of this, but, especially in southern China, cows are uncommon: pigs are more prevalent.  Even at restaurants beef is precious: it is always served in thin slices, and, unlike restaurants in Europe or America, it is difficult to ever find a beefsteak.  Often, when I am out, in the countryside, I will see a lone cow, walking or grazing by the side of the road or being led down the road by a cowherd.  Thus, the cowherd, shown in this scene by Meng Liu, must be relatively rich since he owns five cows.  Although the scene, from its appearance, could be anywhere, it has typical characteristics of southern China.  There is a morning mist, which often covers this area of China. The region is also characterized by mountains, rolling hills, and narrow, secluded valleys, and trees grow tall and slender because it is always warm and wet.  Indeed, this painting is a wonderful pictorial commentary on life in the countryside of modern China.  It measures 65 cm by 80 cm.  Price includes shipping of the dismantled and rolled canvas.  Please call or email for further information.

Homes by Water: painting by Feng Wu Sui 161. Homes by Water: original oil painting on canvas by Feng Wu Sui (1997)

This is a simple, lovely piece showing whitewashed houses by the banks of a canal; a rustic walking brige spanning the water, in a water village, in China.  It is the first landscape by Feng Wu Sui that we have chosen to include in the Leona Craig Art Gallery.  In this painting, Sui uses the same bold brushstroke techniques that he has used in a number of the portraits that we have included in the gallery.  There is nice detail in, not only the stone wall along the bank, but also in the reflections in the water.   It is a simple, pretty piece with bright cheery colors, and it immediately caught our eye when we saw it.

We have other paintings by Feng Wu Sui, in the Leona Craig Art Gallery on-line.  To see more, just click on: Feng Wu Sui Page
