"Watercolor Vines", Xiangxiu embroidery 144b. Watercolor - Vines: Xiang Xiu hand-embroidered portrait

This is the second in a series of hand embroidered reproductions of famous traditional Chinese watercolor paintings, redone in the Xiangxiu style of Chinese embroidery.  This one shows a simple vine intertwined with a bamboo stalk, the green and purple contrasted against the plain white background.  The Chinese characters, relate, in words, what the picture displays.  They say that life is like a vine.  It may grow this way and that, but, in the end, everything will work out, all right.  Although not everything, in life, will be good, and even though you are not perfect, that's just the way life is.  This one, measuring 46 cm by 39 cm, comes framed and matted under glass, as shown (shipped minus the glass).

Even at night, there is movement, clamor, and color on the famous shopping street, in Guangzhou.  It is simply a symphony of life. 

We chose this painting for inclusion, in the exhibition, because of its bright colors and liveliness.  It is also representative of the more abstract impressionistic style that Li has been using for the last decade or so to paint bustling city scenes.

Fall Country Scene: Xiang Xiu hand-embroidery  131. Fall Country Scene: Xiang Xiu Chinese hand-embroidered landscape 

The girl looking off into the distance at the bottom right, dressed in a bright red shirt and bright white pants, draws our curious eye to that corner of the picture, while our eye is pleased by the color in the periphery of our vision.  Gradually, we notice the basket toppled over behind her, and, upon closed examination, we notice that some of the slats are missing.  We see the chickens and duck hunting for feed, and the way that the light peaks though the spaces between the leaves in the trees to make light and dark patches on the ground.  Then, we zoom out to take in the whole scene with its beautiful fall colors in the tall trees that stretch out of view to the sky, beyond, made even more bright by the gleaming silk threads.  Afterward, we notice the thatched roof building, and, looking more closely, we see that there are birds atop it and even clothing hanging out to dry.  A man appears to be searching the ground for something in front of the building, and other people are gathered around a basket, framed in a clearing under the trees.  In between two dogs sniff each other.  The whole effect is just breathtaking, and the wonderful splurge of bright colors is uplifting. 

This hand-embroidery is in the Xiangxiu style of Chinese embroidery.  It comes matted and framed under glass, 62 x 52 cm (shipped minus the glass).

The Fall: oil painting by Dapu 152. The Fall: original oil painting on canvas by Dapu (Ai Min Zhang)

Dapu (Zhang Ai Min) has experimented with a number of styles, in his paintings.  This one is pure impressionist.  It is an impression of foliage, afire with the colors of fall.  It is reminiscent of some of the scenes or parts of scenes of fields from the early Impressionists.  It is comprised of brushstrokes of orange, green, yellow, blue, and brown, representing a small forest with its leaves and plants falling to the ground to blanket it with the colors of fall.  A few splashes of paint, here and there, even give it a slightly modern art look.  It is an interesting piece, in a style with which Dapu is currently experimenting.  This painting was done in 2006 before Ai Min Zhang took the name, Dapu, and was, at that time, painting with the "pen" name, Zhang Yang.
