711. | Venice Bridge, original oil painting on
canvas by Meng Liu It's always nice to find Chinese artists who have broadened their life experince by traveling outside of China. Meng Liu has traveled in Europe, and, like a true artist, he has recorded some of his memories in paintings. This is one of several that he painted in Venice. It is even more interesting because China is also famous for its water villages, and Chinese painters have done many paintings of them. For example, here, in Guangzhou, we have a water village at the southern boundary of the city, called Xiaozhou, which has attracted many of the local artists to paint its canals and bridges, and we even have a number of those paintings in our gallery. Meng Liu is a fine artist from the old northern Chinese capital of Shenyang. He did many paintings in impressionistic styles in the late 1990's to early 2000's, and we are very impressed by his style, in those, with this one as a good example. |

Big Eye Hen Ships: original oil painting on canvas by Xue Sheng Tan, 1962 Big Eye Hen ships have their origins in Guangdong Province dating back several hundred years and are still used for transport, mostly locally, around China, today. They derive their names from the bright red paint in the forward part of the ship with two big white eyes painted on either side: thus, the name, Big Eye Hen ships. They are also fitted out with the traditional ribbed, folding sails. This is a lovely portrait of Big Hen Eye Ships coming into a local harbor, being greeted by people coming out to meet them, in smaller boats. The colors are soothing, and the subtle arm of the harbor, in the background gives a feeling warmth. Xue Sheng Tan is one of the great Chinese impressionist artists from the mid-20th century, and this scene is from a time when China was closed off from the world. The Horseman: original oil painting on canvas bu Zhao Qian Xu (2008) The horse has always played a large role, in Chinese culture, and it has been a theme, in Chinese art for milennia. Although that culture has been lost by most of China, in modern times after the Cultural Revolution of Mao Zedong, it remains in many of the sub-culutres of the so-called Chinese minority peoples, like the Zang of Tibet. This painting of a horseman is part of a series of the Zang minority that Xu did in 2008. All of the paintings are done in dark blues and purples, giving them an ethereal, night time quality. In this series, the figures have the quality of apparitions, giving them a surrealistic feel. PuTuo mountain in Xiamen: original oil painting by Jian Bai Xu (1986) This is an interesting piece. It has a look more like something by Chagall rather than the impressionism that Xu is usually known for. It is from her later year, in China, towards the end of the 1980's just before she and her husband, Xue Sheng Tan, moved to America. We liked the composition, precisely, for its unusual style, like a picture within a picture, and it has a surrealist quality about it. Of course, her mentor, Feng Mian Lin (Lin Feng Mian), was learning to paint during the early 1900's when impressionism, cubism, deconstructivism, and surrealism were evolving art trends. The Stand: original oil painting on canvas by Da Zhong Zhang We like the composition of this portrait. At first, it appears that there are three girls; look more closely: there are four. |

of Guangzhou, original oil painting on canvas |
