Girl Playing Guitar: original oil painting on canvas by Zhao Qian Xu Although guitars are not a typical Chinese instrument, stringed instruments have been part of Chinese culture for centuries. In fact, we see Chinese string instrument quartet concerts, in the little park, in our neighborhood, every Sunday. In addition, since China has opened up to the rest of the world, over the last several decades, many ytoung people, now, aspire to become rock stars. This portrait is typical of Xu Zhao Qian's more loose abstract style, a style that he prefers over precise realism. The pastel colors make it pleasant to the eye, and the more abstract presentation, especially, in the background gives it a softness, echoing the soft, girlishness of the subject. It is a simply wonderful portrait. To view more of the works of Zhao Qian Xu (Xu Zhao Qian), on display, in the Leona Craig Art Gallery on-line, please visit the Zhao Qian Xu Page. |

Nanhai Seashore, original watercolor For Li, the theme of this painting is contrasts of thick and thin. There are wide and narrow lines, in the ropes and poles of the boats. There are broad and narrow brushstrokes, all around the painting. Paint is applied, here, thinly, there, more thickly. In this manner, the painting will have a more natural, realistic feel. I, personally, loved the colors, and I love these
Chinese style boats, which are common, even today, all around Guangdong. |

The Old Fisherwoman: original painting oil on canvas by Jian Bai Xu (1955) This painting is a Jian Bai Xu (Xu Jian Bai) signature painting. It is in the genre of the honest realism of many of the impressionists, particularly Van Gogh. Indeed, it has the look of a Van Gogh. It is an example of what she was taught about art by Lin Feng Mian of the Hangzhou school of Chinese oil painting. A simple fisher woman sits inside an old shed by the docks, in a small port city of China. Her face tells of her life. And because Jian Bai Xu learned that it is not beauty but truth that makes a painting more precious, she has conveyed the feelings of the life of the fisherwoman in this portrait. Catching and selling fish is not a particularly glamorous life. The sun and surf, too, take their toll on ones looks. Yet she seems, not ashamed, but slightly proud, perhaps, resigned to her life but not apologetic. Although her face displays the hardships of her life, and she is plainly dressed, her silver and jade bracelets belie a life of poverty and suggest that she has achieved some modicum of wealth from all of her hard work. This wonderful piece was done in the 1950's after Xu had spent time, in the West, exploring the techniques of Western artists and the colors of their palettes. For us, it is a true masterpiece, lifting Jian Bai Xu to the height of great Chinese impressionist artist. We have other works by Jian Bai Xu, in the Leona Craig Art Gallery on-line. 713. | The Beauty of Fall, original oil painting on
canvas by Meng Liu This painting reminds me of something that might have been done by one of the original French Impressionists, at least, in its theme. It is a lovely field of red flowers, cockscombs, in this case, not poppies that might have appeared in the earlier French paintings. It was painted in the fall, capturing the bright colors of autumn. It is also painted in the impressionistic style that Liu utilized in his earlier paintings. We think that it is a timeless theme, reinvented by a contemporary Chinese artist. We have several paintings by Meng Liu (Liu Meng), in the Leona Craig Art Gallery. To see them all, just click on: Meng Liu Page |
