Tree Stump with
Frog: zisha Tea Set by Cheng Dong Zhu, Yixing, China As a designer of wood furniture, I can really appreciate the realistic appearance of these Tree Stump teapots by Chen Dong Zhu. They have bodies made of yellow clay to represent the wood, which also has "splits" in the surface like a real dying stump would have, plus they have an additional thin delicate layer of brown clay with a rough texture to make "bark" that is partially pealing off of the dying stump. The extra, small branch-work around the handle and spout adds even more to the attention for detail. The lids have rings or other markings to contribute to the realistic feel, and they also have an animal sitting on top of the stump: a frog, as the one that we have displayed, here, and others with a small chameleon or a squirrel, a la the theme that began in the Ming Dynasty. Moreover, each one is slightly different from any other (in fact, we have several in our collection), so no one else will have one exactly like yours. They are really one of the nicest renditions that we have seen of this theme, and the price makes them even more attractive, especially given the quality. The one that we offer, here, comes with a set of four cups, so that you can show it off to your friends, next time you have them over for tea. |

Tree Stump with Frog & Beetle: Yixing zisha Tea Set by Cheng Dong Zhu This teapot is in the tree stump theme with a little bit of whimsy. As in all of these teapots, in this tree stump series, the body is done in yellow clay with "splits" in the wood as would happen with a real dying stump. Then, they are covered with a rough brown clay to mimic bark, which is beginning to peal off of the wood. Added touches include multiple branch work on the handle, spout, and lid-pull. The result is one of the most realistic renditions of this theme that we have seen. In this teapot, there is a frog sneaking up the side of the pot ready to pounce on a beetle on the lid-pull, giving it a very fun and charming appeal. The beetle has his wings slightly open to show his little segmented body. As with all of the teapots, in this series, it comes with four cups, like the ones shown, in item #25, on the Cheng Dong Zhu Page. |

Tree Stump with Chameleon: zisha tea set with 4 Cups by Cheng Dong Zhu,
Yixing, China This is another teapot, in the tree stump series by Cheng Dong Zhu. It is slightly more broad and squat than the others that we have in the Leona Craig Art Gallery, and it has a slightly larger volume, as a result. Again, the body is done in yellow clay with details, in the "wood", as would be found in a real tree stump, and it is covered in rough brown clay to affect the look of bark that is pealing off of the wood. As in the others, in this series, there is nice branch work, on the handle, the spout, and the lid-pull. The animal on top of the lid, on this one, is a chameleon. As with all of the teapots, in this series, it comes with four cups, like the ones shown, in item #25, on the Cheng Dong Zhu Page. |
