Being In Country

China offers many opportunities, but there are also many pitfalls.  Quality varies from low to the high standards set by the ISO.  Even recently, some products have been shown to be unsafe.  If you want low-cost, low-quality, you can find it, but we can also find low-cost, high-quality Chinese-made products.  To be sure, there are  products, available in China, that are fraudulent copies of originals, like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Sony, Microsoft, and Apple.  Moreover, there are companies with intricate, detailed websites that do not exist, except on the internet.

Of course, once you find a product that fits your needs, the next question is what price to pay?  What makes prices of Chinese goods so attractive is the conversion ratio of the Chinese Yuan to foreign currencies.  In China, the Yuan goes a long way.  A homemade noodle dinner at the local restaurant costs 7 Yuan (¥), less than one U.S. dollar, yet the restaurant owner can afford to pay his rent, utilities, and staff.  Ayu can buy a pair of nice jeans at a local boutique for ¥50, but, if I, as a foreigner, go into the same shop with her, the price will be ¥200.  The shopkeeper believes that I think in terms of dollars, and that a pair of women’s jeans for under $30 will seem like an acceptable price to me.  However, even when Ayu goes into a boutique by herself, the price is not fixed but can be negotiated.  With all of these factors to consider, how will you properly navigate the treacherous waters of doing business in China?  Even if you come here yourself, will you be able to get the price and quality that you want, or even more important, the price and quality that you should get?

Living in country, in China, and with years of experience among us, both in China, in business, and in business in China, we can help you run the gauntlet properly.

  • If you are planning to come to China to buy things, we can escort you, in country, to help you find the best quality at the best price, quickly, without wasting your precious time searching by yourself.

  • We can also arrange for hotels, translators, and transportation, if you are coming to Guangzhou or several other cities of which we have some knowledge and where we have contacts.

  • If you are considering doing business directly with a factory, in China, we can be your eyes and ears, make a personal visit to the factory for you, and provide our opinion about the plant, the product, and the people, so that you can make a better-informed decision.

  • Since our CIO is fluent in Chinese, we can do research into Chinese contracts, law, websites, and business.  This offers a true advantage for doing business, in China.  We can translate documents and liaise with Chinese people or organizations for you.  We also have extensive contacts, in China, to help us get your questions answered, discretely but properly.

  • If you would like us to do all of the work, on this end, search out what you want and make arrangements for shipping, we can do that for you, too.

  • Our emphasis at Red Hill Capital has always been on arbitrage opportunities inefficient markets of many different varieties, one of which has been the art markets, which we have been involved in since the 1980's.  Our current emphasis, in the China markets, has also been into the art markets. So, if you are interested in Chinese art or artists, we can help you in your research and in purchases.

Located in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, only an hour and a half by train from Hong Kong, we are at the very heart of Chinese enterprise, in the renown Pearl River Delta.  In Guangzhou, itself, there are clothing markets, shoe markets, jewelry markets, electronics markets, jade markets, art markets, and many other goods markets.  Which market to go to, which vendor in which market, and what price to pay?  We can help you with that.  Guangdong also has many manufacturers in cloth, electronics, ceramics, and more.  So if you want to go beyond the marketplace, directly to the manufacturer of inputs or complete products, we can help you with that, too.  It is important to have someone who knows the language, the customs and the lay of the land to guide you, to assist you, to negotiate for you, and to protect your interests  Our expertise will be invaluable to you, and our connections extend well beyond Guangdong.  We can help you find the best products at the best prices, anywhere in China.

As it turns out, there are also famous art schools and artists, in or near Guangzhou.  In Xiaozhou, a very old area riddled with canals instead of streets, at the southwest tip of the island-in-the-stream that comprises much of old Guangzhou, south of the newer town, there is an artist's breading ground, much as Greenwich Village was in Manhattan, in the 1950's and 1960's.  We have entered a joint venture with a local dealer in oil paintings and sculpture.  We have developed relationships with artists, dealers, and studios that make cast bronze and glass objects.  We can help you with original oil paintings, sculpture, authentic Yixing zisha clay teapots, original or reproduction cast-bronze sculpture, even something larger, specially commissioned for your corporate headquarters, and glass vases and objets d'art.

So, forget all your worries.  Do not waste your time trying to figure it out on your own.  Do not even waste a trip to the country, if you really do not have the time.  Do not continue to pay higher prices for goods than you really need to.  We are already here to help you.  Let us help you figure it out and get what you want.  We work with you for you in country: China!
